I have dreaded writing this for quite some time. Having acne was somewhat of a touchy subject since it was a long and painful battle that I was losing for many years. The last 3 years it finally started to subside, but that wasn’t enough for me. It wasn’t until this last year that I finally won that battle for good… and talk about feeling accomplished!
The thing about acne is it shows up unexpectedly not leaving as quickly as it arrived. When it first started I had no idea why. I tried everything you could think of; creams, expensive lasers, chemical peels, facials….nothing worked.
I did a tremendous amount of research with all of the articles sounding redundant and leaving me confused. What exactly did I need? Antibiotics? $2,000 laser treatment? Peels? Birth control? A life style change? I decided I would try the lifestyle change first before I wasted any money leaving me with disappointment. With a lot of patience and consistency this was the trick!
DIET- Diet is key in the positive aspects of our over all well being! Nothing bad ever comes from eating whole foods so why wouldn’t we trust mother nature to help us fight this battle against acne? Lots of veggies and wholesome foods is always a good idea especially when trying to clear up acne. I always start my day with a healthy smoothie filled with fruits and veggies!
Water- 3 liters to a gallon a day. I know you hear it all the time, but TRUST ME! Just, trust me. I started drinking almost a gallon a day and can’t say I noticed anything immediately. I sure did notice once I stopped drinking 3 liters a day. I then realized the difference in my hydrated vs dehydrated skin. I never have less than 2 liter s a day now. I know it’s hard to drink that much water every day, but I promise it gets easier. A trick I learned to take in so much water is to buy a 32 oz bottle that I fill up at the start of each day, not to refill until it’s empty. Doing that 3 times a day becomes so easy and just like that, you’ve drank 3 liters of water! The exact bottle I use can be found here Sports Bottle
Skin Care– This is just as important as the other changes I was making. I chose to go with a face wash that had Salicylic or Glycolic Acid to help dry out and prevent any existing or future breakouts. It worked! I have a full blog post on the skin care products I use. My Skin Care Regimen
MAKE SURE YOUR MAKEUP IS COMPLETELY OFF! I can’t stress this enough. I can guarantee just washing your face with just face wash alone is not getting rid of all of the foundation, setting powder, and blush ladies! I have been using the Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes for years. I’ve tried other face wipes, but I always come back to these. They get the job done! I wipe off my makeup until I no longer see any on the wipe, wash my face, then I’ll take a cotton face towel and give it one more wipe down for any excess makeup. Let me tell you, that last step confirms to me that makeup wipes and a wash aren’t always enough!
I sincerely hope the route I chose to follow helps even one person out as I know how painful this struggle can be! Now stay tuned to find out how I got rid of the terrible scars the acne left behind…
